August: The Height of Summer

We're hitting the halfway mark for August and have thoroughly enjoyed our time with family and friends in the simmering summer heat. Last week, we were invited to an 18th birthday party, by the parents of course, and spent a few days wracking our brains trying to come up with an appropriately cool gift. What can you get teenagers these days that engages them other than a gadget? The most significant piece of information we knew about CM was that he liked to drink beer. Hmm and so a Beer Brewing Set was in order! Clever no?

Then with the weekend that just went by, we spent with Christoph's mum and his neice, who both came for a visit from Hamburg. That was also another challenge for us. What interesting activity can a 74 year old grandmother, an 11 year old teenager and a middle-aged couple do all together on a very hot day? The answer was the Underworld Tour of the war bunkers in Berlin. Strange to spend such a sunny day underground, but it was perfect for some cool relief from the daytime heat; even if just for 90 minutes.

And there are plenty more activities in the pipeline! The Long Night of Museums is coming up, Lange Nacht Der Museen, and Christoph's favourite; Pyronale 2015 where participating countries compete in a fireworks competition! These are to name just a few more things that we have to look forward to before the month ends! :-)
