Vacation from a Vacation

Christoph and I recently spent 5 amazing days in Kyoto. I have always wanted to go there for the autumn foliage and had heard so many wonderful things about this ancient city. It was the former Japanese capital for over a thousand years and is known as ‘The City of Ten Thousand Shrines’. And talk about temples and shrines! We had to be very conscious to not get ‘templed-out’ and so limited ourselves to visiting only two religious sites a day.

Kyoto's Bus routes. The map initially freaked me out a bit, but after referring to it for a day, it became surprisingly very user-friendly!

Kyoto is where you will find Gion, one of the most exclusive and well-known geisha districts in all of Japan. The city is also renowned for their finely woven kimonos and traditional food. Kyoto is home to some 1,600 Buddhist temples and 400 Shinto shrines that are impossible to see all in one trip, let alone 100 trips!

We had an amazing time and hope to have a chance to see more of Japan in the future. Here are some images from our trip.
